Lesson Title: Beach-Combing

Objectives (on the board):

  • Dimensions of Learning: The students will determine the common names of plants and animals found along the shoreline (#2).
  • Content: The students will find the scientific name of two samples (kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species).
  • Social Skills: The students will find the scientific name of two samples (kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species).

Materials:

Teacher:
laminated keys
bags of shells
resource book for final ID

Student:
textbooks
notebook
pen, pencil

Warm-Up: (Numbered Heads Together) Review of Characteristics of Mollusks

  • Name five phyla of animal kingdom.
  • Give the scientific name for the sea shells group.
  • Name three characteristics of this phylum.

Presentation/Instruction: (Directions for Activity)

  • Groups of four.
  • Person wearing red goes first.
  • First person takes bag and pulls out one item.
  • Use key together to figure out common name.
  • Set item in front of first person.
  • Pass bag to the left.
  • Continue until all items are identified.
  • Work together until the group can identify all common names.
  • Check: Levels of Understanding.
  • #3's come get materials.

Guided Practice:

  • Students do the activity while teacher moves from group to group monitoring.

Independent Practice:

  • Homework: Choose two items and write scientific name and address. Quiz.

Closure: (Whole Class)

  • Hold up item and have students think of and then say the common name.

Appraisal:

  • Group Dynamics: How did taking turns work? Better? Worse? Why?
  • PQP (Praise . . . Question . . . Polish)

Evaluation: Quiz on the common names of shells and plants.
